SECURITY & FOREIGN AFFAIRS: NATIONS SHOULD NOT BE DEPRIVED OF RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION, STATED ARMENIA FOREIGN MINISTER

Date: 09-25-2006
Source: DE FACTO
Author:

“Nations should not be deprived of the right to self-determination, proceeding only from political expedience”, stated RA FM Vardan Oskanyan, participating in the discussions on the Kosovo issue within the frames of the 10th Bertelsmann forum in Berlin.

According to the information DE FACTO received at the Armenia MFA Press Service, RA FM said, “If the world was guided by the fear of the new precedents’ creation, a half of the world states would not exist”. In Vardan Oskanyan’s words, there should be precise criteria of the determination of the fact if a state has the moral right to existence. Taking part in the discussions on The Balkans and the Black Sea – a Litmus Test for Europe, Vardan Oskanyan reaffirmed that the successful realization of the European Neighborhood Policy, practical approaches to the conflicts’ settlement and integrity of the Black Sea region were a litmus test for Europe. Presidents of Bulgaria, Romania and Azerbaijan, as well as the Prime Minister of Chernogoria also participated in the discussions.

To note, in the course of the 10th Bertelsmann forum held September 22 – 23 the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, French PM Dominique de Villepin, the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and Belgian PM Guy Verhofstadt addressed the audience as well.
