Economy: President Sargsyan: “Shushi needs our support”

For about 80 Armenian businessmen participated in a dinner to raise money for a charity within annual Telethon-2009 Campaign held by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan at Ararat Park Hayat hotel in Russian capital city.

The fund raising dinner was also attended by President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Bako Sahakyan, and Speaker of the Parliament of Armenia, Hovik Abrahamyan.

All money raised from Fund raising charity Dinner goes directly to development programs of Shushi in Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Welcoming the participants Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said:

“As you know, fundraising for charity of All-Armenian Fund “Hayastan” gets underway. This event is often fairly called a “national tribute”. For this once, all money goes directly to development programs of Shushi – same Shushi which was one of the educational and cultural centers of Eastern Armenia, same Shushi we always were proud of, and same Shushi which now needs our support.

You can hardly find a town over the world which has experienced such a complex fate. No one war appeared in our region without hurting our beautiful city-fortress. Needless to say, that at least 15 times it changed hands over past 200 years. That is why it is dearer to us, tenfold dearer.

I urge you to be generous in donations, true to type of our benefactors and patrons over centuries. No matter how much you donate, it will not be more than our soldiers’ blood paid for the return of Shushi. So, let us be worthy of their sacred cause.

We are strong and we are many, including those who, word for word, in mountains repairs the Arpa-Sevan tunnel to provide water into the lake; those who teaches Armenian children to Armenian dancing because they believe Komitas’s saying that “the most powerful means of national education is an Armenian dance.”

We are strong by those of us with arms keeps the peace for our people; those of us who expresses pain of Genocide through rock music, foreign language; those of us who in Turkey publishes a newspaper in Armenian and Turkish to give to the world his soul’s word and sometimes dies; those of us who does not get tired and does not lose a hope, explaining different people and especially the officials of many countries that we want justice; those of us who restores Armenian schools Lebanon after attacks.

We are strong by those of teens that call and donate for Artsakh. We are strong by those of us whether he is masonry, patron, and architect building a hospital in Artsakh or new Matenadaran in Yerevan. By those from America and to India and Australia who serves public Armenian prayer each Sunday. By those who does not accept the present political course of Armenia and by those who does. By those Armenians who are not physically along with us, but always they are present in our spiritual, cultural, scientific, and political life – our great fathers who bequeath a rich civilization as well as a sense of pride and trust to be an Armenian. We are strong by all Armenians.”

Total money raised at Fund raising charity Dinner will be announced today during the telethon.
