Security: Serzh Sargsyan: We know what it means to live in blockade

“Saint Petersburg, a city that demonstrates the greatness of Russian culture and history, has opened a new window to Europe. This twon on the bank of Neva is another evidence of the fact that it’s hard to imagine the European culture without the Russian element,” Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said in Saint Petersburg at an event dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the local Armenian community.

“Quite recently we celebrated the 65th anniversary of our common victory over fascism. What Leningrad suffered in 1941-44 is horrific. Thousands of Armenian soldiers participated and sacrificed their lives at the Leningrad battle,” President Sargsyan said, speaking about the blockade of Leningrad.

“We know in practice what it means to live in blockade. Despite the ceasefire established as a result of the heroic struggle of the people of Nagorno Karabakh, Armenia remains blockaded by Azerbaijan and Turkey. Notwithstanding this, thanks to the diligence of our people and the invaluable support of our friends and allies we managed to stabilize the Armenian economy and ensure economic growth. However, the blockade continues and our children continue living and growing up in the 21st century in an atmosphere of dividing lines and mined fields,” President Sargsyan declared.
