ECONOMY & SOCIETY: KARABAKH WRAPS UP POPULATION CENSUS (RFE/RL)

Date: 10-28-2005
Source: RFE/RL
Author: By Karine Kalantarian

The unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic has completed a ten-day census of the population, with officials saying that no extraordinary cases were registered during its course.

Head of Nagorno-Karabakh’s National Statistical Service Benik Babayan told RFE/RL today that verification tours will begin on October 28 and will continue until November 2 after which regional departments will submit all related materials to the National Statistical Service for their subsequent summarization.

According to Babayan, the preliminary results of the census will be available already by the end of November and the final results for the whole of the unrecognized republic as well as region by region are expected to be published in the second half of 2006.

According to officials, a total of 600 people have been involved in the work related to the population census in Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to Babayan, around 120 million drams ($270,000) had been provided for the census conducted in 302 populated areas of the country, including 10 towns and 292 villages.

According to Karabakh officials, no external funding was used in conducting the census, with all expenses covered by the country itself.
