Housing

Close to one hundred and fifty villages and towns in NKR were damaged during the war imposed by Azerbaijan. More than 11,000 private homes and 226 multi-story residential buildings were completely or partially destroyed. This constituted 60% of all housing in the Republic. Seventeen clinics, more than 70 first-aid stations, close to 200 educational institutions, 121 theaters, museums, cultural centers and village culture clubs, and over 500 other social or economic facilities were also destroyed.

Since the 1994 cease-fire, many damaged buildings and facilities have been restored and new ones built. This has been accomplished, in large part, due to humanitarian assistance.

At this time, about 3,000 refugee families from Azerbaijan and 6,300 local families, who lost their homes during the war, require permanent housing and living essentials. At this time 4,541 private homes and 68 multi-story apartment buildings require reconstruction.

Suggested Programs and Estimated Cost:
Construction and restoration of housing - $48 million
