John Kchikian to Sponsor Two More
Reconstruction Projects in Artsakh

PRESS RELEASE
May 18, 2001

WASHINGTON — The Office of the Nagorno Karabagh Republic (NKR) in the United States is pleased to announce that Mr. John Kchikian of Detroit, MI and his Armenian Children's Relief Fund will sponsor reconstruction of school and water distribution projects in Vardashat village of Hadrout province.

Last year Mr. Kchikian sponsored a thorough renovation and refurbishment of the school and water distribution system in Taghaser village of Dizak province (formerly Hadrut). This undertaking was implemented in a joint effort of Ministry of Urban Construction and Artsakh Bank. A letter of understanding exchanged between engaged parties stipulated that the Artsakh Bank will oversee the reconstruction works and be responsible of releasing funds against completed work on sites. The sponsor, in his turn, received reports on work progress. Last year, during his trip to Artsakh, John Kchikian met with NKR PM Danielian and visited the construction sites accompanied by Nagorno Karabagh officials. In September the newly renovated and refurbished school in Taghaser opened its doors to a happy crowd of village school kids, who also received school stationary delivered by their new American benefactor. The village now also has drinking water, due to repaired and upgraded water distribution system.

The new project in Vardashat village envisions renovation of the school that was built back in 1955 and never maintained since Artsakh movement. The water supply and distribution system will be repaired and upgraded to meet growing demand of Vardashat villagers who want to continue live and work in their native village in Artsakh.

Noteworthy, that last March Mr. Kchikian sponsored medical treatment in Germany of Artsakh war veteran Martik Yesayan, who sustained severe head wound.

Acknowledging this continued commitment to supporting Artsakh, Nagorno Karabagh Prime Minister Danielian sent a letter to Mr. Kchikian this month expressing "appreciation for his patriotic deeds".

The Office of the Nagorno Karabagh Republic welcomes Mr. Kchikian's new initiative and expresses continued confidence that allocated funds will be scrupulously used for that purpose.

On behalf of the government and people of Nagorno Karabagh Republic we express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Kchikian for his continued generosity and outstanding vision.
